Biography/History note | The Virginia Symphony Orchestra was founded as the Norfolk Civic Symphony Orchestra in approximately 1921. It merged with the Civic Chorus in 1949 to form the Norfolk Symphony and Choral Association in 1949. In 1979, this organization merged with the Virginia Philharmonic (previously named the Norfolk Symphony), the Peninsula Symphony, and the Virginia Beach Pops to form the Virginia Symphony Orchestra (officially named the Virginia Orchestra Group).
