German graphic designer and painter, influential in the Weimar period, worked as a university teacher in Berlin, and as a designer of books and stamps. He designed the 1936 Olympic diplomas but was dismissed from his professorship at the Vereinigten Staatsschulen für Freie und Angewandte Kunst by the Nazi regime since his wife was Jewish. After the war, he was a professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst.)
