Biographie universelle (CAILHAVA de l'Estendoux (Jean-François), born at l'Estendoux, April 21, 1731; footnote on "l'Estendoux": village of the Haut-Languedoc, four leagues from Toulouse; Cailhava added it to his name as if it were a title taken from the name of his estate, which was rather common at the time, but since he was mocked for the practice, he ceased using it, but began to add the particle of nobility "de" to his name, although his family was as humble as his village; first play produced in Toulouse, 1757; moved to Paris after 1757 and had plays produced and published; collected plays published in 1781 under title Théâtre de Cailhava; elected to the Institut [national des sciences et des arts] in April 1798; retired to Sceaux, near Paris, and died there, June 26, 1813)
