Biography/History noteFrancesco, da Buti (1324-1406) was one of the first commentators on Dante's Divine Comedy; he wrote his commentary between 1385 and 1396 in his own vernacular. A professor at the University of Pisa with specialties in grammar and Latin philology, he authored a dictamen and a famous Latin grammar. He also wrote commentaries on the Satires of Persius, Horace's Ars poetica, the Thebaid of Statius, and Terence.
