From the 2nd half of the 14th cent. it has been called Staryĭ Sambir or Stare Misto. In 1349 it was seized by Poland. After 1772 Staryĭ Sambir was ceded to the Austro-Hungarian Empire where it remained until 1919 when it was incorporated into Poland. In 1939 as part of Western Ukraine it was reunited with Soviet Ukraine)
