Zonta, Mauro. "Giovanni da Capua," in Dizionario biografico degli italiani, v. 55, 2001, via Treccani website, November 30, 2018 (GIOVANNI da Capua (Iohannes de Campana, de Campania, de Capua); a Jewish convert to Christianity, active around 1300 in Rome as a translator into Latin; neither his original Hebrew name is known nor his family; it may be presumed that he was born in Capua, perhaps earlier than 1250; no original works known and the only certain information about his life and activity is found in the prefaces and colophons of his translations, which almost exclusively refer to persons present at the papal court in Rome during the pontificate of Boniface VIII (1294-1303), so he was presumably active at that time and place and not, as stated by most modern bibliographers, between 1263 and 1268; popularized Arab-Jewish science among the Christians, working from existing Hebrew translations from Arabic; translations include many on medical matters, suggesting he may have been a doctor himself; a "Magister Johannes de Capua" active as a papal notary between 1257 and 1263 is not the same person as this Giovanni da Capua)

Jewish Virtual Library website, November 30, 2018 ("John of Capua (Johannes de Capua; 13th century), Italian translator who lived in Rome during the pontificate of Bonifacius VIII (1294-1303). Probably born in Capua before 1250, John of Capua, an apostate, is known for his translation of Kalila and Dimna from Hebrew into Latin. John translated this famous collection of tales, working on the basis of a previous Hebrew version done from Arabic in the 12th century by a Jew named Joel. He worked on this Latin translation between 1263 and 1278 and dedicated it to Cardinal Matteo Orsini. The work was thereafter widely known under its Latin name, Directorium humanae vitae, alias parabolae antiquorum sapientium")
