Wikipedia, Spanish version, viewed May 30, 2023 (Abd al-Hafid de Marruecos; Abd al-Hafid (in Arabic, ʻAbd al-Ḥafīẓ), also known as Mulay Hafid (Mawlāy Ḥafīẓ), sultan of Morocco 1908-1912; born in 1875 in Fez, Morocco; brother of sultan Abd-al-Azaz; opposed his passivity in the face of French colonial penetration, deposed him and became sultan himself, but unable to gain control of the interior of the country; in 1911, besieged in Fez, he was forced to request the help of France; troops under General Moinier freed him on May 21, 1911, leading to French colonization, which took place a year later on March 30, 1912 with establishment of the French protectorate; abdicated in favor of his brother Yusef, who was proclaimed sultan by the French on August 13, 1912; reproduced cover page of Le Petit Journal, captioned L'abdication de Moulay-Hafid, published 25 August 1912; died in exile 4 April 1937 in Enghien-les-Bains, France)
