German Wikipedia, June 27, 2014: "Ferdinand Schmidt" (Ferdinand Schmidt; born Oct. 2, 1816, Frankfurt (Oder); died July 30, 1890, Berlin; German author and popular educator (Volkspädagoge); at 15 became a house teacher in the home of a senior forester in Neuzelle; the death of his father in 1834, Schmidt returned home, but returned to the teacher's seminary in Neuzelle, to pursue teaching; 1837 employed by the Berlin school service and taught in the pauper's school; since 1845 Schmidt authored several popular and juvenile works, as well as textbooks and a history of Prussia; he was scheduled to be promoted to principal teacher, but the provincial education board would grant the promotion with the stipulation that he would no longer publish; Schmidt rejected this and remained a simple teacher)
