DNB (Alesius (Aless, Alesse, Ab Ales, Alane), Alexander, 1500-1565)
Oxford DNB, 26 March 2020 (Alesius [formerly Allane or Alan], Alexander (1500-1565), Lutheran theologian and reformer, was born at Edinburgh on 23 April 1500; he is sometimes referred to as Ales, Aless, or Alesse, but the matriculation roll of St Andrews University records his native family name as Allane or Alan; after escaping from Scotland he acquired a pseudonym in humanist fashion, Alesius - adopted about 1531 - being a Latinized Greek construction meaning exile or refugee; died on 17 March 1565, probably at Leipzig)
