(Iohn Minsheu professor of languages in London) DNB (Minsheu, John, fl. 1617; lexicographer) LC in RLIN, 03-02-93 (hdg.: Minsheu, John, fl. 1617) Dictionary of National Biography online, viewed 15 November 2016 (Minsheu, John (1559 or 1560-1627), lexicographer; having settled in London as a language teacher, Minsheu compiled a 'Dictionarie in Spanish and English' (1599), which was published together with a Spanish grammar and dialogues; he spent some time in Cambridge and at the end of July 1610, he moved with his assistants to Oxford, where he intended to complete the editing of an etymological dictionary; later in 1610 Minsheu returned to London and in 1617 he finally saw his etymological dictionary 'Glosson etymologicon' in print; in 1627 Minsheu, aged sixty-seven and suffering from deafness, died; he was buried at All Hallows, London Wall, on 12 April) |
