((Léon Werth) data view (b. 2/17/1878; d. 12/13/1955; a French writer and art critic, a friend of Octave Mirbeau and a close friend and confidant of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry; Werth was a free-spirited, unclassifiable writer, the author of 11 novels, art and dance criticism, acerbic political reporting, and memorable personal essays; he was Jewish, and left Paris in June 1940 to hide out in his wife's country house in Saint-Amour, a small village in the Jura Mountains. Déposition, his diary, was published in 1946, delivering a damning indictment of Vichy France; he became a Gaullist under the Nazi occupation and after the war contributed to the Liberté de l'Esprit intellectual magazine run by Claude Mauriac)
