She quickly converted, changed her name to Sister Betty X and became a teacher and organizer of classes for women in the Nation of Islam's mosques Married Malcolm X in Lansing, Michigan in 1958 and with him, converted to being a Sunni Muslim in 1964, where she became Mrs. Betty Shabazz. She and four of their six children witnessed her husband's assassination in February 1965.
