Staniland; prolific and highly respected artist, illustrated children's novels as well as painting still lifes, historical scenes, seascapes and portraits; born 19 June 1838 in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire, christened Charles Joseph Staniland; the family moved to Kinston, Surrey in the 1840s; Charles studied at Birmingham School of Art, the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London, the National Art Training School in South Kensington, and finally the Royal Academy, which he entered in 1861, recorded that year in the census as a lithographic artist; elected an associate of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1875 and a full member in 1879; member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1883; later resigned from both; exhibited widely as a painter; in 1869 he began a long association with The Graphic, a weekly illustrated newspaper, and later joined the paper's staff; provided illustrations to many other periodicals; seems to have retired by the early 1900s; he died in June 1916 at Acock's Green, Birmingham)
