Wikipedia, German, December 4, 2020 (Alexander Langsdorff; Alexander Langsdorff (born December 14, 1898 in Alsfeld, Upper Hesse; died March 15, 1946 in Eutin) was a German archaeologist and SS leader; Langsdorff studied prehistory and early history, archeology and German studies in Marburg; he received his doctorate in 1929; he was a participant in various archaeological expeditions to Egypt and Iran from 1929 to 1933; in 1932, he and Donald McCown led the excavations at Tall-i Bakun near ancient Persepolis; he joined the SS in 1933; from February 1944 to May 1945 he was head of the "Art Protection" department in Italy, where he was in charge of the transfer of works of art from Florence to Sand in Taufers (South Tyrol); Langsdorff died on March 15, 1946 in the district hospital in Eutin)
