Wikipedia, die freie Enzyklopädie, 21 May 2018 (Stadtbibliothek Schaffhausen; study and educational library that looks after world-class scholarly permanent collection; because the Kanton Schaffhausen does not have its own library, the Stadtbibliothek in practice takes on the work of a cantonal library; collects literature on local and regional history, although is not supported by legal deposit like most cantonal libraries; double function divided between two libraries in different locations: (1) Bibliothek am Münsterplatz, with historical collectons, manuscripts, incunabula, specialized scholarly literature, Schaffhausen heritage (Scaphusiana), and the Ministerialbibliothek; storage library, closed stacks; (2) Freihandbibliothek Agnesenschütte, modern public library with open stacks, for popular science and entertainment literature, books for children and youth, and audiovisual media; roots in the library and scriptorium of the Benedictine monastery; Ministerialbibliothek first referred to in 1547; in 1636, some citizens of Schaffhausen founded their own library; in the early 19th century, the citizen library (Bürgerbibliothek) passed into the possession of the city, received a new legal foundation, and from then was officially called Stadtbibliothek; setled in the Münsterplatz location in 1923; in 1986, the two partial libraries were created, spatially separate but jointly administered)
