Polari, the lost language of gay men, 2002: p. 1 (a secret language mainly used by gay men and lesbians, in London and other UK cities with an establshed gay subculture, in the first 70 or so years of the twentieth century) p. 7 (polari had roots in the theatre; there were numerous actors or actresses who knew of it, or used it, but would not normally have been identified as gay. Polari was not just a gay male phenomenon; to a lesser extent, lesbians have been reported as using it)
