Campaign undertaken in 1860 by Giuseppe Garibaldi that overthrew the Bourbon Kingom of the Two Sicilies and permitted the union of Southern Italy and Sicily with the North. Garibaldi departed from Quarto (near Genoa) with more than 1,000 men on the night of May 5-6, 1860. He landed in Marsala on May 11, and after the Battle of Milazzo on July 20 controlled all of Sicily except Messina. On Aug. 29 Garibaldi landed in Calabria and advanced to Naples as the Bourbon rule collapsed. On Oct. 1-2, he defeated regrouped forces of King Francis at the Volturno River.
