Found inGNIS, July 27, 1999 (variants: Drake's Bay, La Boca Del Puerto De San Francisco. Description: a bay on the California coast connected with the Pacific Ocean by the Golden Gate. History notes: The name San Francisco was applied to Drake's Bay in 1595. Subsequently the name was shifted to the present San Francisco Bay.)

California's geographic names, c1998: p. 695 (San Francisco Bay: bay, lies between Contra Costa and Alameda Counties on the east side, and Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties on the west side. Called Estero de S. Francisco on Costanso's (1771) map. Cermeño first applied the name "San Francisco" in the region to present Drake's Bay in 1595. Members of the Portola expedition used the term "Puerto de San Francisco" in 1769 for present Gulf of the Farallons before they discovered present San Francisco Bay, and gradually the name "San Francisco" transferred from the gulf to the bay. On some old maps, the south arm of the bay is called Estrecho de San Jose and Estero de Santa Clara)
