Prior to the independence of this nation, the demonym described a person of the eastern part of Czechoslovakia. Slovaks have a distinct identity (language, culture, history, etc.) that sets them apart from the Czechs; Czechoslovak: now of historic interest, this was the term for the population of Czechoslovakia as a whole, but Czech was used for those in the Czech lands (Bohemia and Moravia-Silesia) and Slovak for those in Slovakia. It is significant that 300,000 ethnic Slovaks declared themselves citizens of the Czech Republic in 1994 and the European Union in 2004. Similarly, over half a million ethnic Hungarians are residents of Slovakia, the demonym for which (Slovak) can have specific ethnic application)
